I was lying in bed Sunday evening reading The Art of Happiness at Work, hoping to get some ideas on how I might remain calm, peaceful, and happy during difficult times at the office.
"I don't get this" I said to Holly. (She was lying next to me in bed with her lap-top, playing some on-line card game on Yahoo!.) "The Dalai Lama says that we should have compassion for everyone - not just for those who are more unfortunate than us - but for everyone." Holly nodded distantly, absorbed in her game. I wasn't sure she'd heard me.
"The Dalai Lama says we should have compassion for 'everyone', including our stupid 'supervisors' at work" I continued.** "I really can't see why they're deserving of my compassion!"
"Well," Holly said thoughtfully "think of how difficult it must be for them to go through life being so incompetent."
"...and ignorant." I added.
"Yes, incompetent and ignorant. Oh, the poor dears." Holly sighed compassionately. (She then turned her attention back to her Yahoo! card game.)
You know, I think I just might be getting the hang of this concept of "having compassion for everyone". :)
** I added the word 'stupid'. The Dalai Lama doesn't say 'stupid'.

agreed!
I think that having compassion for your self first is the key.
